A Son and his Father

We did not share a body for 9 months
When we first met we were strangers
And that never really changed
Our lives ran mostly parallel to each other
We shared a home
Greeted each other in the morning
Shared a dinner table
Exchanged pleasantries
Talked about the weather
Occasionally we would watch T.V together

You gave me shelter and food
You taught me fear and obedience
With a stern face and a leather belt
You taught me to be more than I was
Through shame and disappointment
You taught me to be a man
By drinking too much and making a fool of yourself

What more can a son ask for
